Hyundai's Groundbreaking Hybrid

Korea isn't really known as being pioneers in the automotive industry, their Japanese neighbours have been leading the field in the East for some time now. Japanese manufacturers have always been ahead of the curve when it comes to building innovative cars and developing new technologies, up to now that is.

Hyundai will release the brand new Blue-Will at the Seoul Motor Show and I think it is something to really look forward to. Because it is a concept car we might never see it in production as it may be quite expensive to manufacture or even to find car insurance as a result of the technology it utilises.

The Blue-Will only has a 1.6 litre petrol engine, but it is connected to a 100kW electric motor that stores power in a lithium-ion polymer battery. This all sounds very clever, but familiar if you consider the Prius, so what makes the Blue-Will different?

As it is only a concept car at the moment the designers have been given a free reign and a license to challenge conventional methods and materials. Hyundai have incorporated bio-plastics into the engine cover and some parts of the interior. The headlamp bezels are even made from recycled plastic.

So that is a big step forward, but not quite as impressive as the fact that its sunroof is actually a solar panel to help power the car's auxiliary electric systems like the air conditioning and stereo. A Hyundai spokesman added that "All the technology behind the Blue-Will concept is viable and, even though there are no plans for a production version, it shows where we're going with our hybrid technology."

Which I think is good news for the planet and its motorists. So although it might be quite expensive to find car insurance for, if this technology is properly utilised it could have quite a big influence on the technology used in our motor cars.
